Working Hours:
Working hours for this position consist of a 37.5 hours per week Monday through Friday (between the hours of 7:30 am and 8:00 pm) exclusive of a ½ or 1 hour lunch. These hours to be agreed upon between the supervisor and the employee at the onset of employment.
Note: In this position, the employee will be required to work one evening per week. The employee may be required to work occasional other evening or weekend hours with the employee having the option of working this time in addition to, or in lieu of, regular hours.
Summary:
The Advising Center supports student success and retention through proactive advising, monitoring student progress and implementation of early intervention strategies. The individual in this role will serve as a Student Success Navigator / Transfer Specialist for assigned students.
As a Student Success Navigator, this individual will play a vital role by serving as a resource and guide who helps students navigate college successfully. Student Success Navigators are members of a student coaching team who provide intentional interventions, advising and support to student to identify and develop their career and educational goals. Student Success Navigators proactively monitor student progress, conduct outreach and care calls to connect student to services, provide academic /career advisement and facilitate registration. Success Navigators will be responsible for achieving retention and enrollment goals for assigned populations and documenting outcomes.
As a Transfer Specialist this individual plans, develops, and delivers comprehensive advising and transfer guidance services to support the career goals of students.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advise new/prospective and current students in navigating Perkins degree and certificate programs and help interpret academic and institutional policies for students.
- Build a positive mentoring relationship with students and work with and instruct them to resolve issues that impede their academic success.
- Meet and communicate regularly in person, by phone or via teleconference with students to provide information, resources and support as they progress through college.
- Develop individual education plans for Perkins students including: identifying student's skills, strengths, interests; clarifying educational, career and life goals; and supporting students in the enrollment process.
- Provide career guidance to Perkins students to clarify career goals and facilitate internships and employment by connecting to resources.
- Monitor student progress toward goals and proactively advise and assist Perkins students to problem solve issues that may be barriers towards achieving academic goals, persistence, attendance, and completion.
- Review and stay current on curriculum requirements and policies impacting Perkins students, including meta-majors and guided pathways.
- Provide targeted outreach and hold meetings (including remote/online) with Perkins students flagged from the Early Alert program or are identified as at-risk for retention.
- Establish an academic success plan for Perkins students which identifies needs and provides support. Plans include, but are not limited to: Goal setting, GPA recovery, study skills, test anxiety and stress management skills, time management, and connecting students to helpful resources.
- Partner with coaches, faculty advisors and other navigators and support staff to develop and deploy student support, communication strategies and opportunities to empower students to communicate their needs.
- Develop materials and conduct workshops, classroom presentations and coordinate events to increase student success and retention and promote job readiness and transfer.
- Achieve established retention and enrollment goals for assigned Perkins populations while collaborating with the Cashier’s Office, Records and Financial Aid in order to mitigate student risk of being deregistered.
- Collaborate with Academic Affairs and Enrollment Management to develop, update, and promote articulation agreements with four year colleges and universities to promote transfer opportunities for career students.
- Serve as the main point of contact to facilitate cross registration activities of students as outlined by HECBC
- Develop, maintain and update the transfer services web page to include websites and other resources that assist students in transfer and career planning
- Provide guidance in the transfer and college application process. Inform Perkins students of their options including articulation agreements and scholarship opportunities.
- Maintain advising logs and case management files to track contact hours, issues and outcomes with appropriate documentation and reporting.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings and participate in committees as required.

Qualifications:

Required:
- Master's degree in counseling, Education or Human Service-related field and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with students in an educational setting in an advising capacity.
- In lieu of a Master’s degree listed above, a Master’s degree in another discipline may be considered with three years of full-time experience working with students in an advising capacity.
- Experience working with individuals with diverse academic needs.
- Demonstrated strong communication skills.
- Demonstrated experience in maintaining positive relationships with a diverse student population.
- Must be proficient in the use of Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
Preferred:
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) is preferred.
- Experience working with transfer agreements
- Experience conducting transfer credit evaluations
- Experience working with Career and Technical programs.
Communication Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, outside groups and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent. Ability to interpret basic statistical information.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
