The Upward Bound Program consists of two major components, an academic year program and a six-week, non-residential summer program.
Academic Year Program (Sept. through June) En Español
The academic year program components begin the first week of September and end in June, which coincides with the regular school year calendar. During the period, participants will receive the following:
- Tutoring in core subject areas
- Monitoring of homework and school attendance
- PSSA practice sessions
- Career guidance and exploration
- Information on post-secondary institutions
- College and cultural field trips
- College orientation activities
- College entrance preparation
- Financial aid awareness and assistance
- Scholarship information
- Academic and personal counseling
- Study skills
- Time management
- Assistance in applying for college admission and financial aid
Summer Program (June and July)
Upward Bound provides a six-week, non-residential summer program designed to simulate a college-going experience and strengthen participants' academic skills. The summer program also includes an opportunity for real-world work experience and a stipend through job shadowing and internships. During this period, participants will receive intensive instruction in the following areas:
- Mathematics (algebra, geometry and calculus)
- Language Arts (reading and writing)
- Science (biology, chemistry, physics)
- Foreign Language
- Business Classes (economics, interviewing skills, resume writing, etiquette and attire)
- Job Shadowing (local businesses and organizations)
- Paid internships (local businesses and organizations)
- Mentoring program with professionals
- College visits
- Cultural activities and trips
