Locks Nos. 31 and 32 - Our next appraisal will cover all land extending from the southern intersection of Route 22 in Hamburg to and including Locks 31 and 32. The canal bed in Hamburg is used by various industries for carrying some of their sewage. Bridges 66, 65, and 64 across the canal between these points but bridge 65 was recently eliminated and the canal bed filled over for easier access to the abutting properties. The canal bed laying south of bridge 65 does not lay much below the level of the adjoining fields and is used partly by the adjoining property owners or farmers for pasture. We believe the adjoining property owners to be potential buyers for this land.
Locks 31 and 32 are each approximately 125 feet long. These locks are in two different elevations. The canal bed is mostly dry from Route 222. However, lock 32 has a flow of water from the canal on the south. Stone dwelling - This is an old two-story frame dwelling that originally housed the watchman. It was built in 1846. All of the windows and doors are out. There are three rooms on the first floor, two on the second and an unfinished attic. This building is in a very poor condition and it would cost considerable to make it habitable. In order to dispose of the hazard [sic] such as the bridge upkeep and other liability in connection with the unusable locks, it would be our recommendation that the canal bed, stone dwelling and Locks 31 and 21 be sold as one unit. It is our opinion that a fair market value for this entire unit would be $3,000.00. |
