Appraisal Schuylkill Navigation Co. Canal
for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |

Lock 36-37 - The canal bed extending from this point to Locks 34-35 lies mostly between the old highway and the river and is partly filled in and overgrown. The only use that this could be put to would be the widening of the highway or the river. It seems to us that the best use would be to utilize the old canal bed in cleaning up and beautifying the Schuylkill River. However, in Mohrsville it may be possible to sell a small portion to adjacent property owners where the canal departs from the river. This lock abuts along the northern right-of-way of a state highway in Leesport. There is stagnant water completely filling the width of the lock. This appears to be a health hazzard [sic] in the community and is known for breeding mosquitoes. However, there is a nice stone lock house abutting also on the highway and extending along the western side of the lock. This is a two-story stone dwelling having six rooms, electric and outside pump. There is also a frame shed adjoining. This house is in fair condition, most of the decorating having been done by the tenant, N. Hutett, who pays $10.00 a month rental. This dwelling was built in 1846. The house needs repairs inside and out. It has a tin roof.
Remarks - It is our opinion that this entire area, including the stone lock house, locks and canal bed extending to, but not including Locks 34-35, would have a fair market value of $4,250.00. |
