Appraisal Schuylkill Navigation Co. Canal
for Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |

Lock 39-40 - In order to gain access to this property, it is necessary to trespass over adjoining farmland. The old stone locks at this point are of two elevations and are in a decaying and unhealthy condition with stagnant water. There is a two-story stone dwelling that was erected in 1836. It is in poor condition and vacant. There are two rooms, a hall and fireplace on the first floor, there are three rooms on the second and an attic.
The canal bed's average depth is from three to five feet. Some of the canal is used by adjoining property owners but mostly it is overgrown. Remarks - The stone house and lock which is only accessible through adjoining farmland contains an over-abundance of mosquitoes. The adjoining property owner complained to us concerning this condition. We believe the logical and only buyer would be an adjacent property owner, such as the one mentioned. However, we believe a portion of the canal bed could be sold to other property owners, but it is our opinion that the entire area, including Locks 39-40 and stone dwelling and canal bed extending to Lock 38, would have a fair market value of $2,500.00. |
