Our Mission
The Learning Center for Multilingual Students serves all multilingual students at Reading Area Community College, particularly in writing across the curriculum. We support student writers by helping them to:
- Clarify and deepen their thinking.
- Frame projects for audience and purpose.
- Identify and address error patterns.
- Try new strategies.
- Maintain authorial ownership through all stages of the writing process.
Through collaboration with professional tutors, students develop confidence and practice constructive habits that promote academic success. In addition, students find a welcoming second home in the Learning Center through establishing lasting relationships with peers, tutors, and teachers.
ESL Student-Friendly Study Area and Computer Lab
Students can do homework, study in groups, utilize computers and printers, and use English learning software, textbooks and dictionaries. If needed, they can receive help from a tutor. Wi-Fi is available.
Writing Center
30-minute writing tutoring sessions are offered. All tutors are writing teachers experienced in helping students to write college essays in their second language. Signing up for an appointment is encouraged.
English Conversation Group
English Conversation Group meetings are open to everyone (RACC students, family, friends, and community members) who wants to improve their ability to speak English in an informal and friendly atmosphere. The group meets on Tuesdays from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Yocum 103.
Student Testimonials
"The Center is one of my go-to places at RACC. It showed me a new meaning of the word 'to learn.' Precisely, I have not just developed knowledge, but I have also learned that I can count on my comrades, tutors and instructors. Deep down, having so many people ready to help and advise me makes me feel like home. I am sure that every student would discover his own meaning of 'learning' in the Center and I greatly encourage people to come over and learn." -- Idrissa D.
"I always come to the Center if I don't understand my homework or how to do my essay. It is the right place to go when you need any help as an ESL student." -- Monica A.
"If you come here, you're not going to lose anything. Every time that I come out of Yocum 119, I feel that I've achieved something.¨ -- Khady G.
