Summary
This individual will have instructional responsibilities in the Foundational Studies Division, primarily developmental writing and secondarily reading. The individual will also be responsible for academic support assignments including, but not limited to, advising, tutoring, tutor training, coordination of summer “boot camp”, and/or other related service in the Foundational Studies Learning Center.
Load, Working Hours, and Academic Support Assignments
Pre-Fall: 75 hours (over a period of three weeks) of academic support assignments
Fall semester: 9 credits teaching plus 150 hours of academic support assignments
Pre-Spring: 75 hours (over a period of three weeks) of academic support assignments
Spring semester: 9 credits teaching plus 150 hours of academic support assignments
Summer: 100 hours (over a period of four weeks) of academic support assignments
Specific academic support assignments will be determined by the Associate Dean in consultation with the faculty member. Specific hours for academic support assignments will be agreed upon between the supervisor and the employee at the start of employment.
Faculty members are appointed and assigned rank according to established policies and collective bargaining agreements. Specific items such as wages, fringe benefits, and job responsibilities are determined by the College's collective bargaining agreement with the recognized faculty bargaining unit and institutional practices.
As professionals in a community college setting, faculty are involved in a variety of instructional and non-instructional activities which contribute to goals and objectives of a comprehensive community college. The following description of duties of faculty members clarifies the expectations of this institution and is not considered complete or exclusive.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities
- Work diligently with students in the Foundational Studies Learning Center to better prepare them for placement testing.
- Work diligently with students in the Foundational Studies Learning Center to remediate deficiencies identified in initial placement testing and to retest and advance further into and through the remedial curriculum.
- Identify and implement best practices to accelerate students through the remediation process.
- Align remediation and placement testing diagnostics.
- Create a modularized remediation process.
- Employ intrusive advising techniques to more deeply engage students in understanding and managing the barriers to their success.
- Implement strategies for academic support in curriculum courses that require reading and writing support.
- Provide one-on-one and group academic coaching for students to help them to set realistic goals, to develop academic plans, and to improve study and classroom habits.
- Mentor and train tutors for the Foundational Studies Learning Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
1. Prepare and teach courses as assigned by the Division Associate Dean.
2. Review on the first day of class and post a syllabus on the Learning Management System for each course that provides, at minimum, the following information:
a. Expected outcomes and performance objectives.
b. Course syllabus with all assignments and course evaluations linked to the gradebook.
c. Grading policy.
d. Attendance policy - make-up work/tests.
e. Schedule of required readings, projects, assignments, etc.
f. Login information for students to access the College’s LMS.
3. Provide the Division Associate Dean with copies of materials listed in Item 2 above.
4. Maintain office hours in accordance with the Faculty Bargaining Agreement.
5. Participate in student advising and registration.
6. Assist students in formulating educational and career plans.
7. Assist students with academic or course problems.
8. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
9. Maintain accurate and complete course records and comply with all specified reporting dates.
10. Serve on college committees and participate in college governance.
11. Contact students in your classes who have not attended or attend sporadically.
12. Participate each semester in the evaluation and documentation of the instructional process and work to continually improve student learning outcomes.
13. Complete program reviews in accordance with the division schedule.
14. Employ a variety of teaching techniques and strategies to address the diverse learning needs of students.
15. Attend instructional division, academic affairs area and institution-wide meetings.
16. Assist in developing budget for division, if applicable.
17. Commit to ongoing professional development.
18. Notify the Sr. Vice President of Academic Affairs/Provost of special projects, activities, etc. that may be used in publicizing the class, division, or College.
19. Maintain an awareness of effects of all actions or comments on retention, recruitment, and institutional image.
20. Stimulate interest in student activities.
21. Participate in graduation exercises as required.
22. Utilize technology to facilitate learning, improve student success, maintain course records, access the Student Information System, and communicate with others.
23. Attend training on new technologies, including LMS, and be willing to teach hybrid/online classes if needed.
24. Work collaboratively with Associate Dean and division faculty on initiatives to improve student success rates in division courses.
25. Develop and update curriculum.
26. Perform related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities

Education and/or Experience
Education, qualifications and experience required are determined by the position being filled.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Hold a Master's degree in Education, Developmental Education, or Adult Education (or an equivalent degree) with a concentration in language arts and/or writing.
2. Hold a Reading Specialist certification, or a higher credential in the teaching of reading, or have completed 12 graduate hours in the teaching of reading.
3. Have at least two years of college developmental teaching experience within the past five years, or its equivalent in high school or literacy instruction and/or tutoring.

• A thorough understanding of and complete commitment to the community college mission of taking underprepared students and helping them become College-ready
• Experience, ability and enthusiasm to teach courses in developmental writing, reading, and study skills to diverse student populations at the community college level
• Ability and willingness to modify personal teaching style based on feedback and current research in effective teaching strategies
• Ability to lead and willingness to support program improvement through collaborative assessment of student learning and curriculum development
• Experience in advising, placement diagnostics, and academic coaching
• Training and experience with using technology in writing and reading instruction
• Understanding of and sensitivity to diverse populations
• Interest in leadership opportunities such as program coordination
Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals, course syllabi and related teaching documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, other faculty, administration, boards of trustees and the general public.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software. In addition should be able to learn and utilize a variety of education software packages.
Other Skills and Abilities
