The Yocum Library Guide to Latino/a Resources
Books
All our books and those of the Berks County Public Libraries are listed in the catalog, which can be accessed here. Useful keywords include Latino, Latina, Hispanic, Chicano, Chicana, Latin America, South America, Central America, Caribbean, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic. Ebooks include the Yocum Library collections plus Hoopla and Overdrive, streaming services from the Berks County Public Libraries, which are available to Yocum Library patrons. They contain hundreds of eBooks, audiobooks, musical recordings, and films related to the Latino/a experience.
Films
The Yocum Library has a large number of DVDs pertaining to Latin America in both English and Spanish and they are included in the catalog. They include documentaries, U.S. and foreign films, plus TV series. The library also subscribes to Academic Video Online (AVON), the streaming database for academic films.
Databases
- Gale Literature Resource Center include hundreds of Latino/a authors in each database.
- Global Road Warrior, A to Z World Foods, and EHRAF World Cultures databases provide food and customs resources for Latin American countries.
- Informe Academico Full-text Spanish- and Portuguese-language scholarly journals and magazines both from and about Latin America. Log in using your Yocum Library or Berks County Public Libraries card number.
- Project Muse includes many peer-reviewed journals focusing on Latino/a issues.
- ProQuest Central contains thousands of articles on Latino/a subjects. It also includes 700+ publications in Spanish. Its Latin America & Iberia database provides ongoing full-text academic journals from many Latin American countries. Major subject areas of study include business, science, technology, engineering, social sciences, education, and humanities. Its Culturegrams database has reports on all Latin American countries, including foods, customs, and demographic information. Its US Hispanic Newsstream database offers access to 50+ Hispanic newspapers, news wires, websites, and in both Spanish and English.
