Working Hours:
Working hours for this position consists of a 7 ½ hour period (between the hours of 7:00 AM and 10:00 PM) exclusive of a ½ or 1 hour lunch. These hours are to be agreed upon between the supervisor and employee at the onset of employment.
Note: This position will require additional evening and/or weekend work when needed to ensure network functioning and continuity. The employee will have the option of working this time in addition to or in lieu of regular hours.
Summary:
The Junior Network and Telecommunications Engineer assists the Director of IT in developing and maintaining a network that provides maximum and efficient performance and reliability for users. The person in this role is responsible for the design, installation, analysis, troubleshooting and maintenance of the College networks and network devices in an assistant capacity, and under the direction of the Director of IT. The person in this role also acts as an information expert and troubleshooting point person for the Systems Administrator, the IT Support Generalist, and the other helpdesk employees as required.
The College network types include LAN, WLAN, WAN, and SAN. Network devices at RACC include, but are not limited to: routers, wireless access points, networking cables, switches, and network devices including, multilayer switches, proxy servers, and firewalls. The RACC network also relies on server virtualization technology (VMware, Hyper-V).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Installs, monitors, and troubleshoots network switches, wireless cloud controllers and routers/security devices under Director of Information Technology-CIO direction to support uninterrupted service to users of the RACC network.
- Creates and applies configuration templates for network devices (user access, printer access, server access, QoS for VoIP).
- Assists Systems Administrator and IT Support Generalist in installing operating system updates, patches, and firmware updates to Microsoft servers.
- Identifies and resolves network anomalies escalated by Systems Administrator.
- Performs verification of monthly and quarterly configuration backups of all network devices.
- Maintains physical and logical layout of network equipment.
- Supports Systems Administrator and IT Support Generalist as needed.
- Logs and records all work tasks in help desk ticketing system.
- Is able to perform all Systems Administrator and IT Support Generalist duties as needed.
- Mentors IT Support Generalist and IT work-study student workers.
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities in formal training and informal training (out of class, online, etc.).
- Acts as a first line of defense against cybercrime by maintaining diligence in detecting, reporting, and/or correcting situations which may indicate a data or systems threat. Recognizes malware symptoms and resolve them. Reports security incidents (for example if a user password is compromised) to supervisor.
- Reports any suspected cyber related security issues to the Cyber Security and Programs Manager.
- Assists with Disaster Recovery Exercises.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
Required:
1. Associates degree or equivalent in computer information technology from a two-year college or technical school plus two years network-related experience, or four years network-related experience.2. Cisco CCENT or higher Cisco certification.
Preferred:
1. Familiarity with hyper-v and other virtualization platforms, windows server, and Microsoft 365.
2. CCNA Cisco Certified Network Associate.
3. Bi-lingual is a plus
Other Skills and Abilities:
Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Must demonstrate a high level of confidentiality.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Cisco CCENT or higher required. Certification must remain updated and current while employed in this position.
Other Qualifications:
Knowledge of network switches, wireless controllers, routers, and firewalls required.
Working familiarity with printers, computer hardware, network cabling, and Anti-virus programs.
Communication Skills:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the College. Bi-lingual is a plus.
Mathematical Skills
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
